Support
For Families
Families gain knowledge and support for their children in a variety of
ways. Some seek information through research and various informational
packets, some learn through workshops and some by sharing
information with other families. Family to Family provides families a
variety of opportunities throughout the year by organizing and facilitating
the following events:
- Parent
Links - Veteran parents are linked to parents who have a newly
diagnosed child with the same disability or similar disability
as their child. Veteran parents are trained to support and guide
families through what can be the most difficult time in their lives
and that only the veteran parent can understand.
- Breakfast
Meetings - Neighborhood based exchanges that allow families to
share information on various topics vital to the support and
growth of their child/children.
- Individual
Education Plan Trainings - Provide families with the information
necessary to productively assume the role as educational
advocate and become a more competent team member during school
meetings.
- Disability
Specific Groups - Meeting for families who have children with
the same disability to give opportunities to meet other families
and share specific information and resources.
- Social
Opportunities - Planned events give families opportunities to
socialize in an everyday environments like neighborhood
playgrounds,
museum, the beach, etc. These events allow families to relax with
other families who understand what itís like having a child with
a disability.
- Information
Specific Meetings - Topic specific workshops are presented by
experts in the community who can provide information and resources
specific to people with disabilities.
